It's The End!

This fall semester ends really fast, and this will be the last blog post for Intro to Internet (COM 125). Below will be a summary of what I had learned in this module for the semester.

Week 1

What is Internet?

The internet connects different country within a click on the mouse but, of course, that country needs to have access to the network. Most of us have a device that have internet access, for example, smartphone and computer. These devices connect us to the other side of the world.

Week 2

The power of Social Media.

In today’s day and age, there is a new phenomenon:, there is an increasing prevalence of young people spending much of their time on their mobile phones. They are busy updating themselves on Facebook, liking photos on Instagram, and tweeting their current emotions on Twitter. Suffice to say, teenagers spend a large amount of time on social media. It has also been noted that these teenagers are portraying a different image from their real lives on social media, and some have even gone anonymous or under a different name and identity. This could be due to their desire to gain the attention of others, or to protect themselves from online threats.

Week 3

Benefits of using Social Media

Social media is an easy way to learn about your audience
While using a social media management software for example Hootsuite, Sprout Social and many more you can learn who are your audience. It is easy to find the gender distribution, languages used and where are they from.

Week 4

What are E-Business and E-Commerce?

E-business is broader than e-commerce; including the transaction based e-commerce businesses and those who run traditionally but cater to online activities as well. An e-business can run any portion of its internal processes online, including inventory management, risk management, finance, human resources.
E-commerce is “any transaction completed over a computer-mediated network that involves the transfer of ownership or rights to use goods and services. E-commerce includes sales made on the Internet, Intranet, Extranet, World Wide Web, by email and even by fax.

Benjamin Bloom's Taxonomy

Cognitive Domain

The cognitive domain involves knowledge and the development of intellectual skills (Bloom, 1956).

Former students of Bloom revised the cognitive domain in the nineties.

1. They change all the categories to verb forms.

2. Rearranging the categories

This revised version reflects a more active way of thinking and might be even more accurate.

Psychomotor

The psychomotor domain (Simpson, 1972) includes physical movement, coordination, and use of the motor-skill areas.

Affective

This domain includes how we deal with things emotionally, for example, feeling, values, appreciation, enthusiasm, motivation and attitudes.

Week 6

Internet Tools

This week, I did a video and uploaded it to youtube. It was my first time doing a video all by myself.

Week 7

Internet Security

Cybercrime rates are increasing in Singapore, e-commerce cheating or extortion on cyberspace climbed from 510 cases to 1,659 cases last year.Teenagers one of the easiest target online.

Police say that members of public should beware of such scams and take the following precautionary measures:

-Exercise caution when befriending strangers on the internet.

-Do not agree to any request that may put you in a vulnerable position, such as performing compromising acts in front of a webcam and providing personal details to other internet users.

-Contact the police immediately if you receive any message or call from anyone claiming he/she is in some kind of trouble overseas and need you to urgently send money over.

-Inform the police if anyone tries to extort money from you.

Virtual Reality applications

When we hear people talk about Virtual Reality applications, most of us would think about virtual gaming. For example Oculus Rift and Virtuix Omni.Virtual Reality applications are not only for gaming but there are many different kinds of uses.

Week 9

Internet and Politics

Social media is a powerful tool to gather people around in a common platform. Politicians cannot ignore the power of social media even if they hate it. This is because too many of us are on social media. It is fastest way to get information thru millions of people in seconds. Way faster than traditional media.For example Singapore 2015 election, almost all the candidates have a Facebook page, a twitter account or even Instagram.

Week 10

Internet and Journalism

I think that The internet is another platform for Journalist who can't voice or comments their findings. Take Mexico for example, According to Reporters without Borders (2015), Mexico’s press freedom index is ranked at 148 out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index. The government, drug cartels, and media conglomerates in Mexico control the press freedom there.

Week 11

Internet & Innovation

This week, I had talked about this company call Glints. Glints is an online talent recruitment and career discovery platform headquartered in Singapore. It is a platform for young talent to build up their career readiness through internships and graduate jobs; developing skill sets required in different careers.

Week 12

Future of Internet

Everyone in the world, be it in the rural or developing countries, will have internet access. Iron Man technology may become reality! It is possible, we have the ideas, and I'm sure we could create it. 

And that conclude my journey with COM 125. Below is a video we did for our presentation and we call ourselves, The PMS. HAHAHAHA!

What would the Internet look like in the future?

Below are some predictions I have for the future of the internet.

1. Everyone in the world, be it in the rural or developing countries, will have internet access.

I mean that is not impossible. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft's Bill Gates make bid for universal internet access by 2020. "When people have access to the tools and knowledge of the internet, they have access to opportunities that make life better for all of us," the declaration said. "The internet belongs to everyone. It should be accessible by everyone."
Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post that internet access is an essential part of fighting destitution, noting that for every 10 people that are connected to the internet, roughly one person is lifted out of poverty.
"If we connect the more than four billion people not yet online, we have a historic opportunity to lift the entire world in the coming decades," he wrote.

2. Iron Man technology may become reality!

Why not?! It is possible, we have the ideas, and I'm sure we could create it. It is a higher level hologram technology.

3. Everything in the world become "Smart."

We have our Smartphone, smart TV, and google is coming out with Smart car.

4. Buying presents would be so much easier!

We will have collective data in a system on our friends and family members. Buying them the perfect birthday presents is easy because their data tells your shopping service exactly what they will want. Also their sizes and even matching items.

The founder of Glints were drop-outs, they didn't finish their college. Lucky me, I have this opportunity to know them. I was curious why they defer their studies and I asked YingCong (co-founder of Glints) why he did not want to continue his studies? His answer was simple, "I've got no time since Glints was just founded", "I can get back to study anytime I want".

In Glints website, you can search for jobs or internship that suit your taste.

You can create an account with them and if you find any difficulties, they have a chat on the bottom right for you. You can chat with them and they them what you one. Then they will guide you steps by steps.

They have a resources page where you can get information on how you can get an internship/job, resume advice/ templates and many more.

Even though I'm not working in Glints, but I had been to their office countless time. For what you ask? FOR FUN! The people there are so loving, fun and crazy! The founders are very down-to-earth and love to share their experiences. Going back to what YingCong had said,  you could study anytime you want, even when you are 80 years old. But when an opportunity comes, it may not have the time to wait for you. So catch the opportunity, don't let it get away!

However, I think that The internet is another platform for Journalist who can't voice or comments their findings. Carmen Aristegui, a prominent Mexican radio journalist, fired from her job when she refused to apologize in regards to her comment about Mexico's president possible alcoholism. Eventually, she returned on air after several days of public outcry and extensive communication between her superior and various representatives of the President (Booth, 2011). She was fired again along with two of her colleagues, Daniel Lizarraga, and Irving Huerta. This time, it was due to them “misusing” the radio station’s company logo in support of MéxicoLeaks, which is an independent platform for revealing information in the public interest in Mexico (Franzblau, 2015). Mexican political activist Denise Dresser tweeted that “the crime of Carmen Aristegui was in an attempt to give Mexican citizens through ‘#MexicoLeaks’, a platform to denounce corruption anonymously since she was going to receive tons of complaints they shut her up (Flannery, 2015)”.

José Sánchez and investigate journalist in Veracruz,  founded the La Union, which was a weekly newspaper based in Medellín de Bravo. However, due to the lack of funding, the circumstance forced Sánchez to switch from free print edition to an online-only edition (CPJ, 2015). Also, he is considerably well versed in using Facebook. But He was kidnapped from his house on 2nd January 2015 alone with his computer, camera, and other electronic materials (AJ+, 2015).  His decapitated and dismembered body was found three weeks after his abduction in Veracruz State (CPJ, 2015).

These two examples show how the internet has helped journalists who uphold the purpose of journalism:

1. provide the citizens with accurate and reliable information that they need to be free and self-governing.

2. They act as watchdogs over the government and reflect the range of public opinion as well as the diverse groups and interests in the respective society.

3.Serve as forums in the public realm to trade comments or criticisms

(de Beer & Merrill, 2009, p. 6).

Using the internet for political campaigning

For example Singapore 2015 election, almost all the candidates have a Facebook page, a twitter account or even Instagram.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong posted the on his Facebook page, calling Singaporeans to give him the mandate to take Singapore "beyond SG50, into its next half century".

MacPherson incumbent Tin Pei Ling, who gave birth barely a month ago, promptly put up a post about the issues she had championed in Parliament during her first term as a Member of Parliament.

Virtual Reality applications

When we hear people talk about Virtual Reality applications, most of us would think about virtual gaming. For example Oculus Rift and Virtuix Omni.

Oculus Rift

The Rift is a virtual reality head-mounted display developed by Oculus VR. Do I need to talk more about it? I'm sure a lot of us have already seen gameplay with Oculus Rift. Like horror games and even roller coaster games. I really want to try it if I can; it is just too exciting! It is like the ghost or zombies jump right in front of you and you can stop it from coming. Like if you use a computer to play, you can just press the exit for shutdown button. But when you are you Rift, its cover half of your face and before you knew it, BOOM! It's in front of you!

Virtuix Omni

The Omni will free gamers from passive, seated gameplay, unleashing the full potential of virtual reality gaming with the Oculus Rift and future head mounted displays. Gaming on a keyboard, mouse or gamepad while seated pales in comparison to the intense experience and fun that comes from actually walking, running, and jumping in games. Just like what you see in the video, the player can walk and run in 360 degrees and with the 'rifle' on, players can feel that they are really inside the game. Have you ever heard you mum said 'go outside and play!', 'Stop sitting and playing games all day'. Now with this Virtuix Omni, you can tell her, 'i'm not sitting, and I'm having a war outside!' And it is a great exercise too!

Not only for GAMING!

Virtual Reality applications are not only for gaming but there are many different kinds of uses.

1. VR Chair Traveler

In class we did say before we could use the internet to travel around the world! Even though virtual traveling lack of sensory and social components of travel, for example, you can feel the wind blow, you can't touch the wall, you can't smell the air. But it can still be life changing. We know that traveling can cost a lot, and maybe some places are hard to get there. However with VR Chair Traveler, you can do it! The diversion that is walking the Champs-Élysées or scaling Kilimanjaro could offer someone with locked-in syndrome, ALS, or similarly limiting conditions is enormous.

2. Intergalactic Planetary

Ever plan on going to Mars? Most of us have this dream of going into space, but more than 90% of us can't. Not all of us are an astronaut, we are not rich, and also not to mention the risk. Remember the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, the risk is too high, we might not survive before we are out of space!The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum recently held an Oculus Rift-centric exhibit where visitors could travel on the Ranger craft from the movie Interstellar. And for real-life astronauts who might one day have to make a significant portion of their life among the stars to reach far-off destinations, VR can make them feel like they're back on Earth.(Steele, n.d)

Ever think of how this place looks like in the past? We now life in a world of modernization, we have lost a lot of our heritage and history. But with Virtual Reality applications and product, we could see the history behind the walls and also learn from it.The nearly perfectly preserved Pompeii is already made walkable by the Google Cultural Institute, as are many other wonders of the ancient world. Strap on Google Cardboard and away you go.(Steele, n.d)

1. Have you heard before a stranger online ask you for more of your information because they want to be friend with you?

2. Asking you for your address so they can send a gift to you?

3. Asking you to on your webcam to video chat?

4. Telling you they really like you and want you to become their girl/boyfriend?

5. They were really sweet to you for the few days or weeks. But then, they started asking for more.
For example:
Telling you they have some money issue, and you as their 'girlfriend', you should lend them some money. Once you lend it to them, they will never stop asking for more. When you do not want to lend them money, they will start bully you online.

OR

They begin to ask you for photos of yourself, at first, they ask for normal pictures, however, what they really want is you to trust them. So they can ask for more, like nude photos of yourself. Then when you 'broke up' with them, they would start to blackmail you.

6. They will tell you they are from some unknown agency, and they are finding models. They praised you and told you that you were what they are looking for. Then they will ask you to send photos of yourself to them. Just last month, a man offers a teen job, then tells her to perform indecent acts. According to the police, the 19-year-old was told by the man to carry out indecent acts in front of the webcam. He then took photographs of her performing these acts without her knowledge and allegedly blackmailed her for money.

How can learning be made effective thru the use of digital media?

1. Cost effective

Most e-learning sites are low cost, and some are even free! For example W3School, I used this site during my poly year, especially during my programming modules. W3School has web programming tutorials such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, SQL, and JQuery where anyone can try it themselves.

2. E-learning is Fast!

In W3School, there are tutorials, references and examples that show the audience how the codes work before they put it on their website. There is an online editor provided whereby readers can edit the examples, execute the code experimentally, and preview their coding results. Also, there is an HTML color picker for those who need to refer to the color codes. Besides, they have created a forum page for users to discuss and share about programming stuff with each other.

How will the future digital classroom look like?

Students that go to school today have a lot of heavy loads. For example, Textbooks and notes
Laptop. With a heavy load, we might also forget to bring some books or notes or even bring the wrong one. Also, there might be technological vulnerabilities/disadvantages like, Poor Internet connection, Laptop malfunction, Relying on electronic signboard for classes. With a weak internet connection, we are unable to submit assignments, cannot access resources. And if our laptop malfunction, we are unable to access our work or even take a test.

Why should businesses go online? 

1. Expand market reach

With the Internet, the world is connected with each other. E-Commerce can expand their businesses even without opening a physical store in that country. And with mobile web usage growing, a customer can purchase our product anytime and anywhere. A company without a mobile friendly web may go down the drain if they don't catch up.

2. Visibility

Branding and relationships drive physical retail. In addition to these two drivers, online retail is also driven by traffic from search engines. Potential customers may be searching around in the search engine and might come across your website. There is a high chance for them to go to a website that they never heard of, thus increase your visibility, and more people will know about your company.

3. Enhance responsiveness

When you have a physical shop, you can get customer's feedback through survey or feedback card. However, they will have to wait for sometimes till their feedback is heard. When you use an online portal, you will get customer feedback real-time. Which means that you could respond to them ASAP. Thus enhance responsiveness and service to your customers.

4. Remain Open All the Time

Physical stores have a closing time; you cannot have it open for 24/7/365. It is impossible, how many people you will need to hire? How much you need to pay the overtime? But with an online store, it is possible! This will increase the company revenue as the customer knows that our store open all the time!

5. Cost Reduction

With a physical store, you will need to pay its rent, you will need to hire a few salesperson, you will need to advertise your shop. All this will cause your pocket to have a hole before you can earn a profit! On the other hand, Online Store reduce the cost! It does not need to pay rent and even if it does; you just need to pay for an IP address and a host. You do not need to advertise your store; you could use social media and the word of mouth!

Potential Concerns for E-Business and E-Commerce

1. Channel Conflict/ Competition

You might find one or even more online stores similar to what you have. This is because, most of us know how beneficial of having an online website can help to increase company revenue. You will have to fight with similar stores to earn the trust of your potential customers.

2. Customer loyalty

We know that there are tons of stores similar to yours. How can you get your customer to be loyal to you? Customers' mind changes frequently. Customer likes to try new stuff. Also, online store lack of shopping experiences. For example, a kid would want his/her parent to bring him/her to a toy shop and not just buying it online. They would not feel any joy as compared to going into a toy shop where there are lots of toys they could see and touch.

3. Security/Privacy

Having data of your company and your customers online is a danger. How could you keep all this data safe from potential hackers? Computers that communicate with other devices on the Internet have the potential to download malicious software like computer viruses, worms and other malware that can inhibit a machine's ability to function properly. Malware can potentially result in data loss or the need for maintenance, both of which can cost e-businesses time and money.

When one of your post on Facebook or a tweet on twitter have a high number of likes and retweet, it’s more likely to rank higher in Google’s search engine results page.

Share content easier and faster with social media

There is no time-lag in social media. Once you shared or posted something, it instantly reaches to your audience. Compare to traditional media where we need to wait for the newspaper to get published or the TV stations to be done with our promotion videos.

Social media CHEAP

We all know that traditional marketing cost a bomb! So social media is much cheaper and reduce marketing cost for the company. I mean, you do not need to PAY to create a Facebook or a Twitter account. Of course if you want to have more access and know your customer, it is easier if you have a social media management software which you need to pay monthly. However, it is still cheaper then traditional marketing.

Improve customer service

Like what i said before, social media is instance. You can instantly notice your customer feedback or questions they have for you. And you can instantly reply to all of them.

Publicis CEO Maurice Levy has valued Ellen DeGeneres' Oscar selfie at between $800 million and $1 billion, he told a crowd at MIPTV. This tweet was seen by 37 million people worldwide, according to Twitter numbers. Getting a World's Most Famous Selfie at the Academy Awards.

Most of us did not know that this was a social media marketing from Samsung at first. I mean who would know that? Everyone was so happy and so real in they emotions that it can hardly be seen as a marketing stunt.

Doing things out of the norms

Doing things out of the norm may not only get you the attention from the people around you but also people around the world to notice you. With social media being prevalent in almost every part of the world, it is able to link us to every corner of the world and everyone can view any posts on social media instantly. For instance, someone from America can view a post that was sent by someone from Singapore as long as the post privacy setting is set to ‘Public’. This may sound great, as we are able to get closer and connect to people on the other side of the world with a click of a button. However, this connection also shows the ugly side of social media. For example, in the recent news regarding Zayn Malik quitting the band One Direction, a hashtag was going around ‘#cut4Zayn’.  Below are some of the tweets taken from Twitter showing several teenagers self-harming and cutting their wrists in a bid to get their idol to join back the band.

 To gain their idol’s attention, there is an increasing trend in teenagers sharing images and videos of them inflicting self-harm, and cutting their wrist to get their idol back into the group or to attract attention from a particular idol. This images and videos float around the Internet, with enough likes and shares it becomes a trend that encourages other fans to do it. One particular gruesome act was a note saying, ‘If my tears aren’t enough for you, maybe my blood will be’; ‘the faster you cut your wrists, the faster Zayn comes back’.These notes were posted together with bloody photos of girls cutting themselves.

  Strive to have an “ideal” image on social media

This #KylieJennerChallenge shows how teenagers follow trends without thinking twice about the consequences they are going to face. Even when there are other teenagers tweet on Twitter telling people not to do it after they had scar for the next few weeks, teenagers still continue to follow this trend. Teenagers follows what their peers had done so that they can be in the in-group not the out-group by following trends that are not even the rights things to do.

This affects teenagers who are avid users of Facebook as they will come across these articles so as to look into what is considered an ideal image. After which, using their new-found knowledge from these articles or videos, they set about changing themselves and altering their looks and personality so as to fit the ideal image of a perfect person. Most of the teenagers do so as they perceive that these ‘educational articles’ are meant to help them increase their self-esteem and their looks. As the articles were shared by their friends or family, they will conform to the norms where everyone thinks that this is in trend, and come to the conclusion that that they should follow it or risk being alienated or scorned by their peers. 

Good Or Bad?

Teenagers have different image on social media and when interacting with people is to seek attention from their fellow users on the social media platforms. They alter their real self so that they could be popular online. This is to archive a sense of belonging to any groups that they are not part of outside the virtual world. Doing things that are out of the norm are not always negative. But for the example I had given, hurting oneself to gain attention might get you an answer right away. When the “hashtag”, or trend dies off, no one will remember what you did with the purpose of gaining attention, but these scars will follow you down the road. 

Having “ideal” image can both be good and bad. It may let some teenagers to strive to have a better self-image and the way they present themselves. On the other hand, some teenagers follow blindly without knowing the whole story, for example the pouty lips challenge.  Even though being anonymous means that people will not know who you are, but when they give a comment that is acknowledged by others, they get a sense of approval.
